What Is “RoboLove”?
RoboLove is one of the latest brands on the “alternative scene”. We try and steer away from skulls, bleeding hearts, complex graphics and over the top designs.
We dont have graphics or design degrees but we do have photoshop, a laptop and an imagination. We used to own a shop and we would buy our stock in put it all on the rails step back and be like “why is everything black?” so we try and use as many different colour tee’s as possible even though our suppliers are quite limited at the moment.
So what is RoboLove? Its the brand that is going to try and put some colour back in to your wardrobe!
The Story So Far
In September 2006 we opened a clothes shop selling brands such as Atticus, Famous, Rockett, Heartcore and Lowlife. To attract people to the opening of the shop we designed a t-shirt which we gave away for free with all purchases. This free t-shirt was a cheap single colour print on the cheapest garment we could get our hands on. This free t-shirt was the start of RoboLove.Within a matter of days the 100 t-shirts we had had made were gone and people were asking when they would be able to buy more new RoboLove designs. We couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to sell our own brand alongside some massive brands so we had a couple more designs printed up over the following couple of months and they sold really well outselling all the other brands that we stocked.
In April 2007 we closed the shop and focused on RoboLove working on better designs and creating a more professional image.
With a few samples of our designs made up we took some photos, put together a rather poor looking website and jumped right in at the deep end by contacting some of the biggest companies on the Internet.
We were very successful and got the attention of grindstore who have been stocking RoboLove since May 2007 and have had our topselling design “Make Love Not Toast” in the top 20 since!
In September 2007 we chucked all our profit so far and a small business loan in to the London Edge fashion show where we exhibited our first full collection including t-shirts, hats and hoodies.
We received some amazing recognition and built up some good contacts and as a result have our designs selling across the UK, in Italy and in Germany! We were very pleased with how the show went and so promptly booked to attend the following year in February.
How has RoboLove standards progressed?
Our first t-shirt was cheap. Really cheap. It was a single colour print on the cheapest materials which had no shape and felt like low quality thirty year old bed sheet. When we released the next designs we immediatly set about improving our products by using higher quality better fitting garments. The new materials were a lot better to print on preventing the designs from fading at the same time the t-shirts had a much better shape to them which they even keep wash after wash!
We still mostly used one colour prints to keep costs down but have gradually started releasing multiple colour designs as we grow as a brand.
The next big move was getting our own labels sewn in to the t-shirts which gave it a much more professional looking image and for us was something to be proud of.
The final addition to make was swing tags. To begin with we would print sheets of them off using some thick(ish) paper and a standard epson printer. We would then cut these out by hand and attach them to the garments using string and a hole punch. However now we have cards professionally made which we attach using a proper tagging gun!
The final product now is one that we are very proud of and there is very little left to be improved on.
Who works for RoboLove?
Paul and Gemma. We do all the designs, all the marketing, all the folding, tagging and packing, we make the websites, we run the myspace, we organise the exhibitions, we do pretty much everything except for the printing which is done by a local one man screen printer.
We work hard and would like to thank everyone for wearing RoboLove.
